How to Ensure Safety When Using Stirring and Mixing Devices In the Laboratory

Devices In the Laboratory

In any laboratory setting stirring and mixing devices are very important as they protect users from coming into contact with biological content, some of which may be hazardous. Magnetic stirrers, rotary evaporators, shakers, and fluid pumps, are some of the typical stirring and mixing equipment used in labs. Modern stirrers such as mixdrive and many others have also enhanced safety in laboratory experiments. These devices are usually employed in hooded laboratory activities, and they must be controlled in such a manner that no electrical sparks are generated.

Caution when Using laboratory Mixing Devices

In power stirring and mixing devices, as well as any other spinning equipment used in laboratory activities, only utilize spark-free induction motors. While the motors in most presently available stirring and mixing devices satisfy this requirement, the exposed electrical conductors in their on-off switches and rheostat-type speed controllers may create an electrical spark. A variable autotransformer should not be used to regulate the speed of an induction motor that is running under load.

Consequences of a stirrer failure, such as electrical overload, or motion obstruction of the stirring impeller must be considered during every activity. In many cases, stirring and mixing equipment are left to run for extended periods of time without being constantly monitored. However, be sure to check from time to time to ensure everything is running smoothly.
